Archive safety checklist
Use this checklist before opening compressed files from email, cloud links, messaging apps, forums, or unfamiliar websites.
Before extracting
- Confirm you expected the file.
- Check the sender through a separate channel if the file is surprising.
- Look at the full filename, not just the icon.
- Scan downloads when your device offers that option.
- Do not disable security settings to open an archive.
After extracting
Open documents and images cautiously. Be much more careful with executables, scripts, shortcuts, installers, macros, and browser extensions. A compressed file is just a container; the real risk is what comes out of it and what you choose to run.
For work and school files
If the archive contains business records, legal documents, student data, financial exports, or client materials, extract into a controlled folder. Keep the original archive until you confirm the files are complete. Do not upload sensitive archives to random online “extractor” websites.
