Archive helper: choose the safest way to open a compressed file

Use this quick helper when you have a file in front of you and are not sure whether to double-click it, mount it, extract it, or install another app.

You can enter only the extension if you prefer, such as .zip or .7z.

This helper does not upload or inspect your files. Everything runs in your browser.

Enter a filename and choose your device to see the recommended path.

How to use the result

The helper is intentionally conservative. It does not tell you to install software unless the archive type usually needs it. A normal ZIP file on Windows, Mac, iPhone, or Android should usually be opened with the built-in file app first. RAR and 7z files usually need a trusted extractor. ISO and DMG files are often mounted rather than extracted.

When to stop before opening

  • The archive came from an unexpected email or message.
  • The sender pressures you to disable antivirus or ignore a warning.
  • The archive extracts an application, script, shortcut, or installer you were not expecting.
  • The file is password-protected but the password arrived in the same suspicious message.
