How to Unzip Files on iPhone or iPad

The Files app can open many ZIP files, but mobile extraction becomes messy with large, password-protected, or uncommon formats.

Updated for 2026. This guide favors built-in tools and reputable free utilities before paid or obscure software.

Start in the Files app

Save the ZIP file to Files, tap it once, and iOS usually creates a folder with the extracted contents. This is the safest first attempt because it avoids unnecessary third-party apps.

If the archive came through Mail, Messages, or a browser download, move it into a clearly named folder first. That keeps the extracted files from scattering across Recents.

Know the limits

iPhone and iPad are not ideal for RAR, 7z, large multi-part archives, or damaged files. If you need to send the contents onward, a Mac or Windows computer may be more reliable.

Be especially cautious with archives that contain configuration profiles, shortcuts, or apps. iOS is restrictive for a reason; do not work around safety prompts unless you understand the source.

Mobile workflow

  1. Save the archive to Files.
  2. Tap to extract if it is a ZIP.
  3. Open the new folder and confirm the files.
  4. Move only the needed files to Photos, Drive, or another app.
  5. Delete the archive after confirming you no longer need it.
